YUMA, Ariz- While all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were closed on Tuesday due to a threat of violence to all schools…superintendents here in the Desert Southwest say that’s something that they’ve never had to worry about.

In Yuma County, many superintendents say their parents and kids shouldn’t worry and administrators and key personnel are trained to help keep everyone safe in case of an emergency and that something to this caliber hasn’t taken place.

Superintendent Darwin Stiffler for District 1 said, “I’ve been here for 30 years in Yuma and I can’t recall such a thing. We have very good relationships with the Marines, Army the police and the sheriff’s department should anybody be in danger.”

Stiffler also adds, “We have automated calling systems where we can reach out and call all of our parents. we would actually call you and ask for help as well…news to close schools.”

Jamie Sheldahl, Associate Superintendent YUHSD, “For different emergencies we have an emergency management system in place…every one of our sights including the district office has an emergency response plan that’s updated regularly. We have people who go to training. As a matter of fact, these last couple of weeks we had people who had training here locally that was sponsored by local law enforcement agencies.”

Stiffler said, “I think it’s sad for our country that we’re worried about those things. that we need to be worried about those things…overall.”
