YUMA, Ariz. – “I heard a gunshot earlier and then the microphone from the cops and was like what the hell?” Yuma resident Jeremy Gillette is describing the moment law enforcement rushed into his neighborhood Friday night after 10 p.m. Our cameras were rolling at the scene on 4th place and Avenue B as the Yuma Police Department and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office surrounded a suspect held up in an apartment.
“So as I was walking over here I could hear them tell someone to come out peacefully or they were going to send a K-9 in after them”, said Gillette.
Luckily the situation did end peacefully, the Yuma Police Department tells us the suspect listened to their commands and was arrested without further incident. But why were police chasing them in the first place? According to police, it all started after reports of multiple shots fired near Magnolia Ave and 8th street. Officers say they found several bullet shell casings on 7th street and 19th avenue. Where these casings came from or why the shots were fired we do not know. No injuries have been reported.
Officers say they found a vehicle involved in the incident but as they tried to make contact with the suspect police say they fled into the apartment on 4th place and Avenue B. As we now know the suspect, who police believe is involved with that initial shooting case, is now in custody.
For Gillette he says the neighborhood has been getting more violent to the point that he says he’s getting used to it.
“It’s an every day thing…its not surprising the cops are over here its not surprising I hear a gunshot”, said Gillette.
At this point we do not know the suspects identity of what they are being charged with. If you know anything about this case please contact law enforcement or 78-CRIME. Details that lead to an arrest could earn you a $1,000 reward.
