YUMA, Ariz. – The man who shattered dozens of business windows across the city by shooting them with a BB gun was sentenced in court.

Juan Leal Ornelas was sentenced Thursday morning for causing $20,000 worth of damage to seven businesses and possession of marijuana.

A judge ordered Ornelas’ to serve 60 days in jail and three years of intensive probation for the two felonies.

John Leal, Ornelas’ grandfather said, “I’m happy the way things work out for my Grandson. 50 days in prison is not much.”

Big 5, Peter Piper Pizza, Dollar Tree, Salvation Army, Yuma Indoor Marketplace, Yuma County Library and DD’s Discounts were all damaged following the shooting spree.

Leal said after Ornelas’ gets out of jail he needs to get a job to pay his court fines. $250 per month for three years. Ornelas owes approximately $22,000 in damages.

Leal said, “I came to the police station and notified them that my grandson was doing something illegal. They didn’t take care of things.”

When asked why he thinks his grandson does things like this, Leal replied, “He is bipolar.”

He says if could tell his grandson one thing, he would tell him to get his act together.

Leal said, “The sentence is minimum. I’m happy for it, but people think we are criminals. Maybe my son is but not the rest of
the family.”

Leal is relieved, but says he just wants his car back. YPD has had his car for 2 and 1/2 months. He called YPD and they said they are still investigating.

If you have any information on the case, you are encouraged to call the Yuma Police Department at (928) 373-4700.
